The formula

P_max = cabinets × max W per cabinet — the electrical design load.

P_avg = cabinets × average W per cabinet — the energy estimate for typical content.

I = P_max ÷ V — current draw in amps at your mains voltage, and BTU/h = P_max × 3.412 — thermal load.

Worked example

A 5 × 4 wall of 500 × 500 mm cabinets (20 cabinets), each rated 450 W max / 150 W average, on 230 V:

P_max = 20 × 450 = 9,000 W · P_avg = 20 × 150 = 3,000 W · I = 9,000 ÷ 230 ≈ 39.1 A · thermal load = 9,000 × 3.412 ≈ 30,700 BTU/h.

At 80% breaker loading that is three 16 A circuits on 230 V — which is exactly what the power-wiring view of the full calculator lays out cabinet by cabinet.

Frequently asked

Should I size circuits on maximum or average power?
Always on maximum. Max power is full-white output — rare in real content, but a white flash frame will hit it. Average (often called 'typical') is for estimating energy cost, never for electrical sizing.
How do I convert watts to amps for an LED wall?
Amps = watts ÷ mains voltage. A 9,000 W wall on 230 V draws about 39 A; the same wall on 120 V draws 75 A. Spread the load across circuits so each stays within 80% of its breaker rating.
Why does the thermal load matter?
Nearly every watt an LED wall draws ends up as heat in the room — about 3.412 BTU/h per watt. A 9,000 W wall adds roughly 30,000 BTU/h, which is a mid-size air-conditioning unit's worth of cooling.
Where do I find max and average power per cabinet?
On the manufacturer datasheet — and beware of units: some brands quote W/m² instead of W per cabinet. wikiLED's panel database stores both per-cabinet values, verified, for every listed cabinet.
