LED wall weight and rigging loads, calculated properly

Total kg, kg/m², point loads and the questions your rigger will ask — how to work out what an LED wall really weighs.

Cabinet weight is only the start

The datasheet weight covers the cabinet with its power supply and receiving card. It excludes everything that holds the wall up: flying bars or ground-support structure, cabling, and any cladding. Structures typically add 15–30% to the cabinet total depending on the system.

Rental cabinets weigh noticeably more per square metre than fixed-install ones — touring locks, handles and frame reinforcement are mass. If a permanent wall is being built from rental stock, you are paying that weight penalty on the building forever.

W_total = cabinets × kg per cabinet · kg/m² = W_total ÷ wall area

The two numbers that matter downstream

Total weight drives the rigging plot or the wall-mount specification. Weight per square metre is what structural engineers compare against floor and facade limits — typical LED walls land between 25 and 55 kg/m² before structure.

For flown walls, divide the total (cabinets + flying structure) by the number of rigging points to get the point load, then check every point against the venue's rigging documentation. Never assume a truss rating; venues differ wildly.

Ground support, walls and floors

Ground-stacked walls trade rigging points for floor loading and wind/ tipping calculations — outdoors, ballast usually outweighs the wall itself. Wall-mounted installs hang the full load on the building: kg/m² plus mounting-point pull-out forces are what the structural sign-off needs.

Whatever the mounting, the arithmetic starts the same: cabinets × kg, area, kg/m². Get those three from real cabinet data and every later conversation is grounded.

Worked example

A 6 × 4 wall of 500 × 500 mm, 7.5 kg cabinets: 24 cabinets = 180 kg over 6 m² = 30 kg/m². Flown from two points with a 40 kg flying bar: 110 kg per point. Stacked instead: 180 kg spread over a 3 m footprint plus ballast per the wind calculation.

Frequently asked

How much does the mounting structure add?
Rules of thumb: flying bars 10–20 kg per metre of wall width; ground support 20–40% of cabinet weight; slim fixed-install rails much less. Always price the real system — these are estimates for early feasibility only.
What is a safe floor loading for a stacked wall?
Standard building floors are commonly rated 3–5 kN/m² (~300–500 kg/m²) — fine for most walls — but stages, raised floors and old buildings are not standard. The kg/m² figure from the calculator is the number to show the venue.
Do curved walls weigh more?
The cabinets weigh the same, but curving hardware and the geometry of point loads change the rigging picture. Treat any curve as a rigging-design conversation, not a calculator output.
